This class will explore the possible reasons behind the extraordinary Jewish rejection, during the Second Temple period, of the original ancient Hebrew alphabet, in favour of a derivative of the Aramaic alphabet used for the Hebrew language today. Special attention will be given to the history and development of the type of scripts used for writing sacred texts such as Torah scrolls, from Sinai to the Dead Sea scrolls and beyond.
