Israel’s Declaration of Independence, signed 72 years ago, declared the establishment of a “Jewish State in Eretz Yisrael”. Within a few years, laws were passed that gave Israel’s rabbinate jurisdiction over marriage and divorce, and over the years, issues of religion and state have become highly charged in Israel, particularly during election seasons. This session will give a background to the religion and State debate, through the prism of actual cases that have be handled by ITIM, Rabbi Farber’s organisation.
