The early Zionists were a pretty pessimistic lot. Whether it was catastrophic violence from without or creeping assimilation from within, they firmly believed that, without a Jewish state, the Jews were doomed. With the benefit of a century of hindsight, we’ll see if the prophecies of Herzl, Pinsker, Jabotinsky and others still feel relevant in 2020.
