Author Anna Epstein will discuss with Arnold Zable and Danielle Charak the issues in her exhilarating book: “Art and history, Jews, refugees, white and black Australians, the pre-war past and the troubling present”. The creative, wildly imaginative father and son, writer Melekh Ravitsh and artist Yosl Bergner, were linked in their conviction that they could change the world, and in their prescient recognition of the common fate of Indigenous Australians and persecuted European Jews. Though Bergner painted his father’s adventure as a fantasy, it showed a profound understanding of refugee reality, relevant across the world then as now.
