Jews of Sephardi and Middle Eastern backgrounds were part of Australia’s post-war migrants. Most were expelled from traditional and ancient homelands in Arab and Islamic countries. Their experiences included well-integrated idyllic lives, brutal pogroms and the Holocaust. This session will describe the life’s journeys of several “Sephardi” Jews from Melbourne and Sydney. A further insight into Sephardi life will be highlighted through photographs of historic Jewish sites in Turkey, in the Greek cities of Iaonnina and Thessaloniki (Salonica) and the islands of Rhodes and Kos. The presentation will begin and end with a few minutes of traditional Sephardi music.
