Type 1 diabetes affects 122,000 young Australians and 21 million worldwide. Daily insulin administration is needed to control sugar levels. Stem cell therapies introduced in bioengineered devices are a possible means of overcoming the need for insulin administration. This session will discuss the science and Halacha of using stem cells, and the arrangements between an Australian diabetes research institute and the Israeli company, Kadimastem Ltd, examining the suitability of a device for clinical use.
