In 1985, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) won the Nobel Peace Prize. Soviet and American physicians came together for the cause of peace at a time when Cold War tensions flared. With decades of antinuclear and antiwar activism under his belt, American co-founder and Harvard cardiologist Bernard Lown led the way. But many thought he had a moral obligation to bully pulpit to press the cause of Soviet Jewry, particularly given his collaboration with prominent physicians on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Based on Lown's own archive, this talk explores these competing demands.
