Up until the fifteenth century, the majority of Jews lived in Islamic lands. These communities developed rich cultural traditions influenced by their home countries. The political upheavals of the twentieth century led to the displacement of the vast majority of Jews from Islamic lands; only a tiny fraction remain. Many of them eventually found a new home in Australia. Life in Australia was a struggle, both in terms of navigating the wider community but also within the Jewish community that did not understand them. The new exhibition “Jews from Islamic Lands” tells this largely untold and unrecognised story.
