The longing to return to Zion is a powerful metaphor that has inspired songwriters since the days of King David. In this session we will look at the history and variety of Zionides (songs about Zion) sung by Jews and non-Jews: from biblical psalms to Zionist anthems, from Gospel hymns to Broadway tunes, from folk rock to reggae and beyond. Artists discussed will include Harold Arlen, Jerry Herman, The Weavers, Peter, Paul & Mary, Don McLean, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Boney M, Bob Marley and Matisyahu.
