In her award-winning novel “The Sound of Breaking Glass”, Kirsten Warner captures the inner world of the Second Generation. The legacy of the Holocaust continues to reverberate for children of survivors. The new field of epigenetics describes how transmission of trauma takes place, something children of survivors have always known. They talk about barbed wired behind the eyelids, the list, the shower, the sound of jackboots—memories which are not actually theirs. “The Sound of Breaking Glass” asks about the fate of a girl named after events of so long ago.

Kirsten Warner

Kirsten Warner, journalist and member of the Auckland Second Generation Group for many years, won best first book of fiction at the 2019 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards and the Hubert Church Prize for Fiction. Her Jewish father Gunter was a refugee from Berlin in 1939.
