In this session, we will take a look at three fascinating contemporary issues having to do with the status of Kohanim. The commandment to avoid ritual impurity from the dead still applies to Kohanim in modernity. But what does this mean practically? Can a Kohen be a doctor? Is a Kohen who himself has killed allowed to bless the community during dukhaning? And would the wife of a Kohen pregnant with a baby boy need to herself avoid contact with the dead, and if so, are they obligated to find out the baby's gender, now that technology makes this easy?

Phil Kaplan grew up in New York. He graduated from CUNY Queens College with a BA in Jewish Studies and received semicha from Yeshivat Chovevei Torah. Rabbi Phil moved to Sydney with his wife Abra in July of 2019 where he serves as Associate Rabbi at The Great Synagogue.
