Mayer Kirshenblatt (b. 1916, Opatów, 1916) left for Canada in 1934. He taught himself to paint at age 73. His daughter presents his paintings and stories, based on interviews she recorded over forty years. Together, they recover a lost world “lest future generations know more about how Jews died than how they lived”—the streets and courtyards, the town characters, the pregnant bride standing under the wedding canopy just before giving birth; the kheyder teacher caught in bed with the drummer's wife; the cobbler's son, and a "black wedding" in the cemetery to avert a cholera epidemic.
