Jews were present in Australia at first European settlement. But Jews were disproportionately transported, at approximately five times their population average within Britain. Was this a consequence of prevailing social conditions, or the perception of Jews by the influential social commentators? We have all heard the stories of convicts who stole a pocket handkerchief, what about those who committed white collar crimes? This session will consider middle-class Jewish convicts, and reflect on the contribution their education brought to this new society
